Covered walk-way canopies help schools in inclement weather

Arched roof walk-way canopy installed between school buildings

Waverley supplied & installed the WeatherSpan arched roof canopy system for RG Carter on the extension and refurbishment project at Roman Way First School in Royston. The project included a new build primary classroom block situated across the other side of the playground to the existing school buildings. A walk-way canopy was required to link the two areas together and enable the easy flow of students and teachers in all weathers.

The route between the existing school and the new classroom block presented a number of challenges for Waverley’s installation team. The walk-way canopy was required to go around three sides of an existing early-years play area before turning 90 degrees across the playground adjacent to a perimeter fence and to meet the entrance doors of the new classroom block. A total of five separate canopies were used and to provide maximum coverage, adjoining canopies had to over/under lap each other. In addition, the playground was sloping which meant the installation team were required to pay particular attention to the height of each canopy to ensure the correct levels were maintained.

A potentially tricky project was finished on-time, on budget and snag free

Waverley’s project manager Mark James commented ‘Refurbishment projects like this are always logistically challenging. The time put in prior to installation to ensure pad stones were correctly position allowed us to get ahead quickly on site which enabled us to accommodate changes in other trades’ schedules. A potentially tricky project was finished on-time, on budget and snag free’.

Following a site visit, Waverley provided a full set of layout drawings to RG Carter to allow their ground work subcontractor to correctly position pad stones for each canopy leg. The Waverley project team liaised closely with RG Carter to ensure the installation teams did not hinder other trades resulting in the project being completed on time and snag free.

The WeatherSpan arched roof canopy was chosen as it creates a visually stunning walk-way canopy. The integral gutter system collects rain water within the canopy frame and conceals downpipes inside the canopy posts. Down pipes exit the canopy posts just above ground level. Being a modular system the WeatherSpan canopy gave the installation team a high degree of flexibility onsite to ensure the maximum coverage could be achieved.

The end result is a clean, sleek and smart looking walk-way canopy which blends in with both the new building and the existing school.
