Binfield Learning Village, Berkshire

ShadeTech Roller blinds for new-build school in Berkshire

Binfield Learning Village is a new build all-through school and has created places for over 1,800 children. Equipped with a nursery, primary and secondary school, ‘Kings Academy Binfield’ will cater for those with learning difficulties as well as over 16 year olds. Built by main contractor Mace, it is part of a large development by Bracknell Forest Council which includes over 400 new homes.

Waverley were awarded the subcontract package to manufacture and install window blinds to all windows. The building design presented a couple of challenges – air ducts existing the buildings in the top quadrant of windows and window winding gear coming from the windows, out of the window reveal and onto the inside face of the wall.

Waverley manufactured over 300 ShadeTech® RBL-C chain operated roller blinds with Sigmatex® 30 fabric to classrooms and Deltablock® 40 fabric to science labs and cookery classrooms.

All blinds were fixed using the ShadeTech® mounting bar. This allows multiple fixing points along the width of the window blind helping to spread the load, achieving a much more secure fixing than two fixing points at each end as is the case with standard brackets. This is especially helpful when fixing into sensitive substrates such as plasterboard, and/or on the end of reveals where masonry/plaster tends to be less stable.

55mm extension brackets were used in the mounting bars to allow the fabric on the blinds to miss the window handles.

Where ducting vents exit the building through the window, blinds have been split, with one blind the mounted directly below the vent and the other top fixed into the top of the window reveal. Blinds have been manufactured to miss the window winding gear.

All roller blinds have a retainer fitted to the operating chain and the chain loop finishes at least 1.5m from the floor in order to comply with BS EN 13120 Child Safety Regulations.

Sigmatex® 30 fabric is a fire retardant fabric available in a range of plain colours making it ideal for the school environment. A light grey colour was chosen to blend in with neutral décor scheme. Science labs and food preparation areas benefit from Deltablock® 40 fabric which prevents any light entering the room through the fabric as well as being suitable for water proof and resistant to chemicals. It can also be wiped clean.

Waverley project manager and installation team worked closely with Mace to deliver the project on time and snap free. The end result is a brand new education facility with a hardwearing, high performance window blind system that is guaranteed to give years of service.
